With the Light Blues only able to name one player in the squad who was developed at the club as a youngster, the Gers had to leave three empty spots in their ‘A’ list to comply with UEFA rules.
That has left the Portuguese winger joining Ibrox outcasts Graham Dorrans and Kyle Lafferty on the sidelines while Jon Flanagan and Jamie Murphy are omitted through injury.
Fourth choice keeper Andy Firth has also missed out on a place in the squad.
Despite missing the first leg, Canada international Scott Arfield is included in the list and it’s likely he’ll be involved in the return at Ibrox on July 18th.
Candeias’ exclusion doesn’t mean he won’t be able to play in Europa at all this season with clubs submitting a fresh list for each round up until the group stages.
Gerrard can also make use of the club’s Academy sides with players in the youth sides on the ‘B’ list – providing they meet the criteria.
