Former Rangers star Alex Rae has slammed Celtic manager Neil Lennon for his remarkable ‘meltdown’ in a press conference on Monday afternoon [Scottish Sun].

The Celtic manager is back from a period of isolation, following the club’s trip to Dubai, that ensured he was unable to take charge of his depleted side for recent draws against Hibernian and Livingston.

The Hoops have received criticism from across Scottish football for their actions and chief executive Peter Lawwell recently issued an apology for the trip, admitting that jetting off abroad amid the worsening Covid situation was an error in judgement.

Yet, despite a fresh positive case being identified in the Celtic squad, Lennon came out all guns blazing to the media on Monday, taking aim at other clubs, former players and even the Scottish Government.

Rangers fans were stunned by the rant and Alex Rae has dished out criticism in response.

“He looked like a broken man in that press conference and to come out swinging, I get that he’s a proud guy but it was the totally wrong thing to do,” he said [Scottish Sun]. “Instead of rolling with the punches, he has come out swinging. He’s doubled down and he has gone against his chief executive, so you are thinking to yourself the two of them have a completely different message altogether.”

“I think one of the key things is that I understand why he wanted to get there, but the fact is that they have taken two points from two games since they came back.

“I don’t even know where he is going with it. I was trying to play devil’s advocate and say is he trying to deflect away from the results? But it looks to me like he has had a bit of a meltdown today.”

Celtic’s consecutive draws since their trip to Dubai ensured that even though Rangers dropped two points at Fir Park on Sunday, Steven Gerrard’s side are still 21 points clear at the top of the table.

The Hoops will have an almost full-strength side to pick from when they take on Livi at the Tony Macaroni on Wednesday night, but even if they do go on a winning streak now, Rangers are in pole position to take the title.

The Gers are next in action against Ross County on Saturday and Steven Gerrard has dropped a selection hint regarding an impressive 24-year-old.
