HJK Helsinki manager Mika Lehkosuo has told the Sunday Post that he didn’t have issues with Alfredo Morelos during his time with the Finns – and can’t understand why the Colombian is having so many problems with referees in Scotland.
Morelos has picked up four red cards this season – three of them against Aberdeen – and gained a reputation for attracting trouble.
Many feel that’s harsh on the striker and Lehkosuo admitted Morelos could get “frustrated” at times.
“He was just a young boy when he came to Finland, but we didn’t have many issues with him,” he said.
“He used to get very frustrated and lose his focus sometimes. That said, he didn’t have many cards in Finland from the match officials.
“So why is he having so many problems with referees right now?
“I’m afraid I don’t know enough about the referees in Scotland to answer that.”
Morelos has had one of his reds this season rescinded but still has a lengthy disciplinary record.
With 13 bookings and four red cards to his name in 38 games, he’s definitely attracting referee’s attention.
As Rangers go into a critical stage of the season, Steven Gerrard will be making the striker well aware of how important he is.
While there are questions to be asked of the standards of refs – Morelos needs to learn to walk away.
He’s no use to Gerrard’s side if he is sat in the stands serving a ban.
