Former Rangers star Graham Roberts sparked some controversy on Twitter last night after England’s defeat to Belgium by comparing Gers icon Paul Gascoigne and current international Jack Grealish.
Roberts hailed Gazza as England’s “greatest midfielder in the last 25 years” and insisted Grealish is “closest to him in style” as he lavished praise on the Aston Villa star.
The former Spurs, Rangers and England star took to Twitter shortly after England lost 2-0 in the Nations League to heap praise on Grealish’s performance but it didn’t seem to go down well at all with fans.
“I have had pleasure of watching England’s greatest midfielder in the last 25 years many times in Gazza for Spurs and Rangers and honestly I think Jack Grealish is the closest I have seen to him in style,” Roberts said.
Rangers fans will remember Gascoigne in his pomp and his hat-trick against Aberdeen to seal 8 in a row is still held as one of the best individual performances at Ibrox.
Fans on Twitter weren’t having the comparisons between Gazza and Grealish though – with one fan saying it is an “insult” to the Geordie genius.
Here are some of the comments from bemused fans:
Give over, comparing Grealish who has a lot of potential and had his 1st start for England + I hope he kicks on to be a great player to England's legend Paul Gascoigne, a legend in Newcastle, a legend in Scotland, and a legend in Italy is laughable. Calm down

Grealish is miles away from Gazza. Always will be. Fact.

Never mate, I watched you at Spurs, 40 year's season ticket holder, you was a legend in my eyes, Gazza was a fantastic player, silky and floored at the same time. Grealish isn't fit to tie his boots (yet) in my humble opinion!

Maybe Style yes but not physical and mental strength to hold players off, long time before anyone compares go Mr Gascoigne, love that man👍🏻♥️

Grealish is good but nowhere remotely close to what Gazza was.

He’s still finding his feet at international level. When he does, perhaps he’ll stay on them! 😂.

Seriously no chance. Not fit to lace Gazza's boots. Gazza was a genius on the ball. Stayed on his very and the place was buzzing. Grealish spends too much time feigning injury treating to get fellow professionals booked or sent off. The ref saw through him tonight.
