Ex-Rangers striker Steven Thompson says Aberdeen "lay down" to Celtic

Former Rangers striker and BBC Sportscene pundit Steven Thompson has claimed that Aberdeen lay down to Celtic in a scathing attack.

The former Dundee United forward was reviewing the action as Aberdeen were blown away by Celtic 4-0 in their own backyard.

It was an embarrassing display from Derek McInnes and Aberdeen appeared to down tools in the first half after an early Celtic opener. Thompson didn’t hold back.

“They were awful in that first-half… they were pathetic,” said Steven Thompson [Sportscene 27/10/19].

“You can understand why the supporters are really frustrated and angry with that performance because they just lay down to Celtic.

“It was toothless from them.”

Aberdeen are clearly a club on the slide and they’ll do well to recover this season under an increasingly under-pressure Derek McInnes.

There’s no doubt that the club is underperforming in Scotland but you can bet that when Rangers visit Pittodrie there will be much more of a fight from their players.

By the same token, their fans will also put up more of a fight and attend the ground in greater numbers.

Whatever the reason for it, Aberdeen’s players and manager clearly do not have the mentality to compete with Celtic.

Driven by their fans and the historic rivalry with Rangers, Aberdeen tend to show up in battles with the Ibrox club, particularly on their own patch.

But following the Gers 5-0 demolition of the Dons at Ibrox earlier in the season, can we expect a more ruthless Rangers when we take the trip up north on the 4th of December?
