Former Celtic star Gary Caldwell has sparked a furious reaction from Celtic fans after he claimed that Rangers have a stronger starting XI than Neil Lennon’s side.
Speaking on BBC Scotland’s Radio Sportsound, the former Scotland international said that e felt Rangers were “as good or possibly even better” than their bitter rivals – but don’t know how to “get over the line.”
Caldwell is probably right in his view that the Gers have a stronger XI than Celtic but that hasn’t stopped fans of his former club going bonkers.
The former Celtic defender also thinks Rangers could win both of the upcoming Old Firm game in the league – which would really set up a thrilling finale in the title race.
“I think 1-11 Rangers are as good, or possibly even better than Celtic,” he told Sportsound.
“They’ve proved the last two games because the cup final they outplayed them but couldn’t get it done and in the league game they outplayed them and won the game at Celtic Park.
“I could actually see them, if they’ve got a fully fit squad, both Old Firm games, I could see them winning them.”
After winning the last meeting between the sides on December 29th, winning three of the four league Old Firm clashes this season would see Rangers slash the 10-point gap at the top of the table.
Celtic fans were going crazy at the former Partick Thistle boss’ comments and took to Twitter to unfairly lambast him.
Here are some of the comments from furious Celtic fans on Twitter:
I’m not saying Rangers aren’t decent or don’t have ok players & on their day can’t beat Celtic & obviously have done. But not one would get in my best Celtic 11. I’d challenge anyone to say who would.

How can he get away with saying that without Celtic being in the studio to defend themselves from that utterly ridiculous piece of nonsense ?
Laughable and proof that the thought of 9 is beginning to hurt.

Toeing the party line already. Shameful. If he believes what he’s saying it’s easy to see why he was sacked at Wigan and Chesterfield. A joke.

It was more difficult to win a league when that clown was a centre back 👎
