European football returns this week as Rangers take on Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League and four other British sides in action – and broadcaster Sky Sports have inexplicably snubbed the Gers clash in their preview of the upcoming games.
Rangers join Chelsea, Wolves and both Manchester clubs in action and Sky have published a preview of the “quintet’s” games but there’s barely a mention of the Gers.
Both the Champions League and Europa League sections have a part of the article titled ‘What is the fixture schedule’ but only the two games in each competition featuring English clubs warrant a mention.
There is a small bit about the Rangers game but, like most of Sky’s coverage of clubs north of the border, it feels like little more than a footnote to the ostensibly more important English sides.
Steven Gerrard’s side travel to Germany trailing 3-1 on aggregate and knowing they’ll need a massive turnaround to have any chance of reaching the quarter-finals and returning to Germany later in the month.
They will be without new signings Jon McLaughlin, Calvin Bassey and Leon Balogun for the clash with Leverkusen so Gerrard will have to decide between George Edmundson or Filip Helander to partner Connor Goldson in central defence.
Given Sky’s woeful coverage of the Scottish game, it wouldn’t be a shock if they suggest a start on Thursday night for any one (or all three) of Balogun, Bassey and McLaughlin.
