Approach confirmed as Championship side eye ex-Rangers defender as new boss

Former Rangers defender Russell Martin looks set to take charge at Championship side Swansea City after his current club, MK Dons, confirmed they had been approached for permission to speak to Martin about replacing Steve Cooper.

In a statement released on their official website, Dons said that they hadn’t planned to address the approach for the ex-Rangers man until after today’s Carabao Cup clash with Bournemouth but “intense media speculation” had forced them to comment.

Martin took the reins Stadium MK in November 2019 and led the club to 13th place in League One last season, with Swansea looking for a new boss since Cooper’s departure earlier this month.

MK Dons can confirm that an official approach has been made by Swansea City to speak to Russell Martin regarding their vacant managerial position. To our extreme disappointment, this was received less than 24 hours prior to our first competitive fixture of the season,” MK Dons’ statement said.

“To minimise disruption to our players and our match preparation, it was decided that this would be discussed after today’s game.

“It was not our intention to release a statement until after discussions regarding the approach had taken place but given the intense media speculation, we felt it necessary to confirm the situation to both our players this morning and to our supporters before the game.”

John Eustace was previously linked with the Swansea job before ruling himself out and it now appears Martin will be the ex-Rangers man taking charge in Wales.

Despite his time at Ibrox not being particularly well-regarded, Martin seems to be carving out a decent reputation as a coach and the move to the Championship should help him continue to improve.
