In last season’s Scottish Cup semi-final, it looked like curtains for Andy Halliday.
The diehard bluenose had just trudged off the pitch 2-0 down in the first half against our biggest rivals. He was goaded. It was painful viewing.
It looked like he’d never recover.
But resilient as ever, Andy Halliday has made his mark on this squad already this season. He’s not just back in the fold, but he’s central to Gerrard’s plans.
Andy is reliable, capable and versatile. He’s a useful option in the squad in midfield, at left back or even on a wing.
But it’s how much this chance means to him that is most admirable. He will do anything to play here. And he’ll also play anywhere.
Gerrard has put an arm around Andy Halliday
When Halliday was being probed yesterday on his personal situation in August, Gerrard wasn’t amused.
There was a bullishness about his response as he jumped in. Questions on him being a utility man felt condescending. “Good players can play anywhere,” Gerrard said calmy.
On the fact he’s been asked to play all over the pitch, Andy was honest. He said: “He showed a lot of faith in me and I’m in debt to him for that and it’s just up to me to repay it in performances this season.”
”I’m happy when I get a jersey, so wherever it is it’s business time. It’s just about putting a good performance in.”
Gerrard, a diehard Liverpool fan, clearly empathises with Halliday. He understands how important this is to him. He’s not ready to take it away from him but Halliday just needs to work hard.
But more importantly he needs to believe in himself.
Gerrard has helped him do just that.
