Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes has insisted that referee John Beaton was right not to send Curtis Main off after the Dons star’s horror challenge on Borna Barisic in yesterday’s 2-1 win for Rangers at Pittodrie.

With the hosts already down to ten men, Main launched into a shocking challenge on Barisic to earn a booking before being immediately replaced by McInnes, despite there only being a few minutes until the break.

The Aberdeen boss thinks people are “getting their knickers in a twist” over the challenge and was adamant after the game that it only merited a booking.

“It was a yellow card for me,” McInnes said [SportsMole].

“Everyone is getting their knickers in a twist about it but it was a yellow card and no more.

“It was a robust challenge but it’s a yellow every day of the week. I have seen it again.

“He goes in too aggressively, so it’s a booking, but he hasn’t hurt the boy, he’s fine.

“A lot of people are losing their marbles a bit there, but the right decision was made by the referee.”

Despite his insistence, McInnes didn’t answer why he immediately replaced Main and refused to acknowledge the player as he made his way off the pitch.

While he might claim it was a tactical switch, making the change after 42 minutes seems implausible at best and an outright lie at worst.

Rangers fans on Twitter were left fuming over the challenge and took to Twitter to criticise the Aberdeen star and refereee John Beaton
