Rangers kick off pre-season with a win as fringe stars given chance to impress

Rangers have got their pre-season campaign underway with a 3-2 win over Partick Thistle as Gio van Bronckhorst handed a chance to his fringe stars to shine.

With the likes of Joe Aribo, Calvin Bassey, Alfredo Morelos, Kemar Roofe, Allan McGregor and Filip Helander all missing, there were opportunities for players such as Glenn Middleton, Josh McPake, Stephen Kelly and Mateusz Zukowski.

John Lundstram opened the scoring just a few minutes in with a powerful finish after Scott Wright cut in from the right and skipper James Tavernier’s touch fell perfectly for the Englishman to fire home.

Thistle equalised with fifteen minutes gone before Scott Arfield set up Fashion Sakala to restore Rangers’ advantage just before the break.

Half-time saw Rangers change all eleven players as the Light Blues replaced the experience in the starting XI with a side mainly made up of Academy stars.

Partick again pulled level after the break, Cammy Smith netting for the visitors shortly after the restart as the much-changed Rangers side took their time to settle back into the game.

With five minutes left, Rangers took the lead for the final time, Josh McPaek firing low beyond the Thistle keeper to make it 3-2 and give the Gers the win on their first outing of pre-season.

Next up is a trip to Portugal for a warm-weather training camp before a friendly clash against Sunderland before van Bronckhorst and his players return to Scotland for the final stretch of pre-season and further fixtures against Blackpool, West Ham and Spurs.
