Rangers take on Motherwell at Ibrox on Saturday afternoon in a key Premiership fixture.

The Gers crashed out of the League Cup at the quarter-final stage at the hands of St Mirren on Wednesday night and now both the players and the coaching staff are under scrutiny.

A home league fixture against an out of sorts Motherwell side, who have only taken one point from their last four matches, provides the perfect opportunity to bounce back, though, and a win would extend Gerrard’s side’s lead at the top of the table to a whopping 16 points.

The fixture is the first of five Premiership outings in 15 days, so the need to keep players fresh will be a factor, but the manager is still likely to name a very strong side.

Allan McGregor should retain his spot in goal, while there’s likely to be two changes to the back four, with Filip Helander and Borna Barisic coming in to join James Tavernier and Connor Goldson, at the expense of Leon Balogun (injury) and Calvin Bassey.

In midfield, Bongani Zungu and Joe Aribo may make way for Steven Davis and Glen Kamara, with Scott Arfield keeping his place.

Gerrard recently described Jermain Defoe as “hungry to get on the pitch” following his goal off the bench against Ross County [Rangers.co.uk], and with Alfredo Morelos suspended, he could be handed just his third league start of the season in the no.9 role.

Ryan Kent is set to take up his usual slot on the left while Ianis Hagi is a candidate to start on the right, with Kemar Roofe possibly held back for upcoming games against St Johnstone and Hibs.
