Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has named his first starting XI of the season as the Light Blues kick off their Premiership title defence against Livingston at Ibrox – and Gers fans on Twitter are surprised at the team news ahead of the game.
The Gers boss has named a strong side, as confirmed by the club’s official Twitter account, however, there were one or two surprises as Allan McGregor was left on the bench in favour of Jon McLaughlin while Filip Helander and Borna Barisic were missing from the squad completely.

With Gerrard confirming before the game that Ryan Jack and Alfredo Morelos would definitely miss out while there were late decisions to be made on others – thought to be Joe Aribo, Kemar Roofe and Brandon Barker – the Rangers boss had a near full-strength squad to choose from.
Summer signings Fashion Sakala and John Lundstram could both make their competitive debuts, with Sakala named in the starting XI while Lundstram has to make do with a spot on the bench.
The Gers line up with a back five of McLaughlin, Tavernier, Goldson, Balogun and Bassey with Davis, Kamar and Aribo in front of them.
The front three of Hagi, Kent and Sakala should have more than enough firepower to break down Livi and get three points on the board ahead of the rest of hte Premiership games kicking off later.
A midweek Champions League qualifier with Malmo will no doubt be in Gerrard’s thoughts as the Gers edge closer to a European windfall but getting off to a winning start in Rangers’ first title defence in a decade is vital.

Good to see Sakala get the nod, hopefully gets off to a flying start today. Borna carrying a knock? https://t.co/fpcKs66byn
