In a boost for Rangers, key Aberdeen player Marley Watkins has reportedly been ruled out of the upcoming Premiership clash at Pittodrie [Daily Record].

The Gers return to competitive action against the Dons in a week’s time and will be hoping to start 2022 with a win.

The only previous meeting between the two sides this season finished 2-2 at Ibrox, and Stephen Glass’ side won three home games on the bounce prior to the winter break.

However, Rangers have a good record in the Granite City in recent seasons.

Rangers boost as Aberdeen star to miss Pittodrie clash

Aberdeen look set to be understrength for the game, as key attacker Watkins reportedly won’t recover from injury in time to feature.

The Wales international picked up a foot injury against Dundee on Boxing Day and is expected to be sidelined for another couple of weeks [Daily Record].

It’s a big blow for the Dons given that he’s started each of their last nine Premiership fixtures, scoring twice in a 4-1 win over St Mirren last month.

Hedges could be on the move

There are also doubts about Ryan Hedges ahead of the match.

The influential winger scored in Aberdeen’s 2-1 win over Dundee last time out but is reportedly the subject of transfer interest.

Sky Sports reported [via Football Scotland] on Monday that EFL Championship promotion chasers Blackburn Rovers have made an improved offer for the 26-year-old after their initial approach in the summer was turned down.

Given that Hedges is out of contract at the end of the season and hasn’t accepted a new deal, it’s likely that the Dons will cash in on him at some point in the window, so he could well also miss the clash against the Gers.

Meanwhile, five clubs are reportedly chasing a mercurial player Rangers sold in the summer window.
