Key Rangers player could sit out Leverkusen clash - report

A Scottish Sun report has suggested that key Rangers player Alfredo Morelos could be left out of the XI for Thursday evening’s fixture against Bayer Leverkusen.

The Gers are finally about to complete their Last 16 Europa League tie against Peter Bosz’s side, almost five months after the first leg was played at Ibrox.

A full squad has jetted out to Germany for the game as Rangers try to defy the odds and progress despite trailing 3-1 on aggregate.

Yet, the Scottish Sun suggests Morelos could be left out due to ongoing transfer negotiations.

Sky Sports reported in late July that the 24-year-old had agreed personal terms on a move to Lille but the two clubs are yet to agree a fee and it’s suggested that Rangers may not risk the player picking up an injury whilst talks are ongoing.

The signings of Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten, announced on Tuesday, suggest the Gers are planning for life without Morelos and having forked out for two new forwards, it’s plausible that they wouldn’t want to risk any hitches in the Colombian’s sale.

However, there has been no indication from the club that El Bufalo will miss out against Leverkusen and Steven Gerrard is lacking in alternative options up front.

Neither of the new arrivals are eligible for the fixture and Jermain Defoe missed the trip to Aberdeen at the weekend with a hamstring injury.

Gerrard would likely face a backlash from supporters if he left out his only eligible senior striker with European progression still theoretically possible, so expect the manager to throw caution to the wind and start his star man.
