The Gers were linked with a move for the Scotland international during his time with Ayr United and then Dundee United as Shankland’s impressive Championship scoring form turned heads.
A boyhood bluenose, there were plenty who were talking up a potential plunge for the striker during Steven Gerrard’s tenure at Ibrox.
But for whatever reason Rangers opted not to move for Lawrence Shankland and following a short and disappointing stint in Belgium, the striker signed with Hearts in the summer.
It’s been a solid season so far the talented 27-year-old who looks to be hitting top form at Tynecastle just in time for the Jambos’ trip to Govan.
Rangers to welcome form Lawrence Shankland to Ibrox
Netting 12 goals in 22 games in all competitions, Shankland has five in his last three Scottish Premiership matches including a hattrick against Old Firm rivals Celtic.
The striker also scored the winner in Hearts’ 3-2 weekend win over Motherwell with only Rangers’ Antonio Colak and Aberdeen’s Bojan Miovski outscoring Lawrence Shankland in the Premiership this season.
Rangers are seemingly well aware of the player’s qualities and the Gers will need to be on maroon alert to ensure that the club is not ruing yet more dropped points in the title race.
Rangers are currently seven points off Old Firm rivals Celtic with manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst under increasing pressure following the 2-1 defeat to St Johnstone at the weekend.
Hearts and Lawrence Shankland come to Rangers fourth in the table and will be looking to go within six points of second place with a victory at Ibrox.
Meanwhile, Rangers fans are already casting their net far and wide as they muse over who might replace Van Bronckhorst should he be sacked.
