Rangers midfielder Joe Aribo made his competitive debut for Nigeria in today’s 2-1 win over Benin to start off qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) – and Super Eagles fans were again delighted with his performance, calling the midfielder a “blessing.”
Aribo had appeared in two friendlies for the Super Eagles before his competitive bow and had impressed against Ukraine and Brazil as Gernot Rohr introduced some new faces to his side ahead of the AFCON qualifiers.
The former Charlton star was named in the starting XI at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo and played the full 90 minutes despite having only had one training session with his team-mates before the game.
After scoring twice in his previous two games, fans were hoping Aribo would make it three out of three but it wasn’t to be – although the Gers ace did put in another stellar performance to help the Super Eagles on their way to three points.
Here are some of the best comments from Super Eagles fans after the Rangers star’s competitive international debut:
Akpeyi: Stay away
Collins: Needs rivals
Aina: Best RB
Aribo: Nice home debut
Ndidi: Should do more for 🇳🇬
Chukwueze: Needs team play
Kalu: Nice ⚽
Osimhen: Ideal striker
Rohr: Poor game mgmt as usual
NTA: National embarrassment#NGABEN

When that J. Aribo of a boy is in possession of the ball I just shut my eyes, expecting that soon as I open it I'll see the ball in the net.
That's how much confidence a quality player can put in the mind of his fans, far better than any option we've had in that position for yrs.

He said we are missing Mikel and Ighalo. Two wonderful players for me who have done their country proud but it's time others take over from them. The present form of Aribo & Osihmen can help cushion the loss of Mikel & Ighalo. https://t.co/BoIzvvvyCh

Sometimes you just need to watch a player for a few minutes to know he is special..If there is an 'unnatural' dip in form, then it is psychological.Aribo is special & i will say it again,he is much better than Mikel Obi.#NGABEN #AFCON2021Q https://t.co/yq4gLy0i0m

Aribo has been really impressive. He almost scored his third in as many games but was thwarted by Benin goalkeeper. He then set up Osimhen moments later but Benin goalkeeper was up to the task once more
