Rangers star Calvin Bassey has enjoyed a stunning rise at Ibrox over the last 12 months – and he’s carried that over to the international stage with a fantastic performance for Nigeria last night as they suffered defeat to Mexico in a friendly.
Bassey has been touted for a summer exit in a Scottish record transfer and the Nigerian media have jumped on board the Bassey hype train after his performance for the Super Eagles.
Nigerian outlet SoccerNet were one of many left waxing lyrical about the Rangers number 3 as they lost out 2-1 thanks to a goal from Santiago Gimenez and William Troost-Ekong’s own goal – with Bassey’s pinpoint cross setting up Cyriel Dessers to score his first goal for Nigeria.
Bassey played the full 90 minutes for the Super Eagles as 56,872 fans turned up AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, most of whom were there to support El Tri.
While few Rangers fans want to see the defender move on, there’s an acceptance that the sort of £25million fee being talked about would be too much for the Gers to turn down.
Here’s what SoccerNet had to say about Calvin Bassey after the Rangers star impressed in the defeat by Mexico:
The young defender played as a wing-back against Mexico and was easily the best player in an Eagles team that looked rusty early on and struggled to keep up with the pace and movement of the Mexicans throughout.
Bassey is perhaps the most talked-about footballer in Scottish football at the moment after his exploits in the Premiership, the Europa League, and the Scottish Cup.
And after producing another decent performance on the international scene, it is obvious even to his harshest critics that the young lad is the real deal.
It is little wonder that the Leicester City academy product has been linked with a move to Chelsea and Bayern Munich.
And as Chelsea are set to say goodbye to a few defenders in the summer, indeed, there is no better time for the Blues to go in for one of the most talented, most versatile young defender in the game.
