Rangers defender Nathan Patterson played the full 90 minutes for Scotland last night as Scott McTominay’s injury-time winner sparked jubilant scenes at Hampden and kept the Tartan Army dreaming of a first World Cup appearance since 1998 – and Patterson’s turnaround from a really poor first half earned him huge credit from the watching Gers fans.

The Ibrox prodigy was given the nod at right wing-back over Motherwell’s Stephen O’Donnell but struggled to find his feet in the opening 45,  coming in for some deserved criticism as Scotland went in 2-1 down at the break.

However, after the break the Rangers star looked much more like the player who has been pushing James Tavernier for a starting spot and linked really well with Billy Gilmour as Scotland turned the game on its head.

Second-half goals from Lyndon Dykes and Scott McTominay completed a huge win for Steve Clarke and his players ahead of what should be a fairly routine outing against the Faroe Islands in midweek.

Patterson will be hoping he can retain his place in the starting XI and continue to get experience at international level and Gers fans were full of praise for him after his impressive turnaround last night.
