Rangers defender Nathan Patterson played the full 90 minutes for Scotland last night as Scott McTominay’s injury-time winner sparked jubilant scenes at Hampden and kept the Tartan Army dreaming of a first World Cup appearance since 1998 – and Patterson’s turnaround from a really poor first half earned him huge credit from the watching Gers fans.
The Ibrox prodigy was given the nod at right wing-back over Motherwell’s Stephen O’Donnell but struggled to find his feet in the opening 45, coming in for some deserved criticism as Scotland went in 2-1 down at the break.
However, after the break the Rangers star looked much more like the player who has been pushing James Tavernier for a starting spot and linked really well with Billy Gilmour as Scotland turned the game on its head.
Second-half goals from Lyndon Dykes and Scott McTominay completed a huge win for Steve Clarke and his players ahead of what should be a fairly routine outing against the Faroe Islands in midweek.
Patterson will be hoping he can retain his place in the starting XI and continue to get experience at international level and Gers fans were full of praise for him after his impressive turnaround last night.
Here are some of the comments from Rangers fans on Twitter after Nathan Patterson impressed for Scotland:
Patterson really struggled in the first half. Occasion was getting the better of him, but like top players do he bucked up his ideas and went out & showed why he’s a top prospect who deserves to be in the Scotland set-up!

If you are being honest on Patterson tonight the 1st half he wasn't great and looked nervy but 2nd half he's been a different player. He links up with Gilmour so well, keep the attacking fullbacks on and go for it.

Indeed, poor first half, excellent second half. Was crowded out too often first half and was a bit slack. Second half he was at his marauding best.

Wouldve been a travesty had Scotland not got the 3 points there. 2nd Half was Excellent.
Well done to our own Nathan Patterson 💙

Nathan Patterson's two halves tonight show exactly why he's going to be a top player

Can guarantee that virtually every tweet that criticises Nathan Patterson’s performances for Rangers and Scotland comes from an Aberdeen, Celtic, or St. Johnstone fan.
