Rangers are facing major issues at centre-back heading into the club’s Europa League opener against Lyon after a double defensive blow at Ibrox.
Gers fans were rocked by the news that key defender Connor Goldson was self-isolating ahead of the match with St Johnstone, the player an ever-present for the club last season.
Goldson’s influence at centre-half is monumental and whilst Rangers steered past the Saints, the potential of losing him for the game against Lyon would be a sizeable blow.
It remains unclear how long Goldson will be out of action for Rangers but here’s what Gerrard had to say about his absence.
“He’s very robust and he’s been really crucial all the way through since day one for me,” said Gerrard [Sky Sports].
“I’d have loved to have him available but unfortunately we have to do what we have to do.
“Thankfully we have got good options who hopefully step up and perform well in his absence.”
After the game Gerrard claimed he was “not too sure about the timescale” on the player’s return.
But whilst losing one key defender is bad enough, the Ibrox side may also be without Swedish international defender Filip Helander.
Big Fil was stretchered off in the eventual 2-1 win over St Johnstone, and manager Steven Gerrard has admitted that the situation is a worry for the Ibrox club.
“I’m concerned, he’s at the doctors now getting assessed,” said Gerrard [Sky Sports].
“He’s got ice on, and is getting bandaged up. It doesn’t look good but until we scan it and assess it in maybe 24/48 hours time we are not too sure.
“Fingers crossed he can pull through but we have other defenders who can step up if he is missing for the short or medium or long term.”
The Gers Gaffer would then point to Ibrox pair Leon Balogun and Jack Simpson as being more than capable of stepping up in Fil and Connor’s absence.
However, when it comes to the Europa League, the Ibrox club may now be ruing a decision regarding Jack Simpson ahead of the Group Stages.
Centre-back Simpson heads up a list of absentees from the club’s Europa League squad with Nigerian international Leon Balogun the only recognised senior centre-back available in the squad.
Speaking of the Europa League squad, Ibrox manager Steven Gerrard has been explaining why fans shouldn’t read too much into the inclusion of one key player.
