Rangers starting XI v RB Leipzig confirmed as Gers aim for Europa League final

Rangers are back in European semi-final action tonight for the first time since beating Fiorentina in 2008 – and Gio van Bronckhorst has named his starting XI to face RB Leipzig in Germany.

The Gers boss has sprung a surprise by dropping Fashion Sakala to the bench and going with a front three of Joe Aribo, Scott Wright and Ryan Kent.

The Light Blues – and thousands of Rangers fans – have travelled to Leipzig hoping to extend the dream and take a step closer to next month’s final in Seville.

While nothing will be decided tonight, Rangers can’t afford to lose ground to the Germans but have been left weakened by injuries to a number of key players, including Filip Helander, Ianis Hagi, Alfredo Morelos and Kemar Roofe.

Leipzig’s only previous UEFA encounters with Scottish opposition were against Celtic in the 2018/19 UEFA Europa
League group stage, when they won 2-0 at home before losing 2-1 in Glasgow while Rangers have already eliminated German opposition in this season’s competition, beating Borussia Dortmund 6-4 on aggregate in the knockout round playoffs with a 4-2 win away from home before a 2-2 draw at Ibrox.

Tonight marks Rangers’ 50th fixture against German opposition, winning 17 and losing the same number with 15 draws.

Despite being favourites to reach the final, Leipzig have won just one of their last six European home matches – however Rangers have only won away from home once this season in the Europa League.

Veteran keeper Allan McGregor starts in goal behind a back four of James Tavernier, Connor Goldson, Calvin Bassey and Borna Barisic.

In midfield, John Lundstram and Ryan Jack take up their usual berths with Glen Kamara in a more advanced position.

Ahead of them, Joe Aribo, Scott Wright and Ryan Kent lead the line for the Gers after a successful outing against Motherwell at the weekend.
