Benfica boss makes bold Europa League qualification prediction

Benfica manager Jorge Jesus has claimed Rangers and Benfica have a “90% chance” of qualifying from their Europa League group ahead of the two sides meeting in Lisbon on Thursday.

The Portuguese giants suffered a shock 3-0 defeat last night by Boavista and Jesus admits that defeat makes a win on Thursday night even more important for his side.

Both sides have won their two group games so far and look in a good place reach the knockout phase with Jesus insisting his side have no time to wallow in last night’s loss.

“It makes this week’s game against Rangers all the more important,” Jesus said, as quoted by the Daily Record.

“We are playing a very good side who have two wins in the group, like us. I think there is a 90 per cent chance we will both qualify from the group.

“With the hectic schedule of games just now, there is no time to ponder that defeat. It’s important we recover quickly and prepare for the challenge of playing against Rangers.”

A win in Portugal on Thursday would be a massive result for the Gers and give Gerrard’s side a massive boost towards reaching the knockout phase.

Three wins from the first three games would likely leave the Gers only needing a point or two from the remaining three games to qualify.

With two of those games at Ibrox, it would be an ideal situation as Rangers look to reach the knockouts for the second season in succession.
