Rangers currently lead the Scottish Premiership by six points and are in a strong position to retain the title. The question is, what position will we finish come May 2022?
Of course, the natural answer is Rangers will win another title and pile more misery on Celtic as they try and regain the league title following their failure to capture ten in a row.
There are numerous reasons why I believe the club can win title number 56 at the end of the season.
The glamour of the Champions League awaits
The winners of this season’s Scottish Premiership crown will qualify for the group stages of the 2022/23 Champions League automatically (if this season’s winners qualify via their domestic league).
This is as big an incentive as any and one that Giovanni van Bronckhorst and his men will be aiming to achieve.
Our first foray into the Champions League since 2010/11 occurred earlier this season and ended up in disappointment under Steven Gerrard.
The Dutchman has prior experience in the competition, managing Feyenoord in the 2017/18 edition and this experience could be vital.
Rangers will be determined to retain the league so the club can prove that they belong amongst the elite.
Revival under van Bronckhorst
Make no bones about it, the club was stagnating slightly at the tail end of Gerrard’s reign. Whilst we were winning routinely, the performances weren’t up to the previous season’s heights, and this was worrying.
There was obviously something in the air and it soon materialised as Gerrard moved to Aston Villa and left the side after three and a half years.
This was an anxious period, who would take over, and could they continue where the Englishman had left off?
The Ibrox faithful needn’t have wasted time worrying, as van Bronckhorst has given the side that added edge and completely rejuvenated the squad, a run of eight games unbeaten is testament to this.
Long may it continue into the New Year.
Defensive woes appear to be solved
Last season, Rangers set the British record for goals conceded during a 38-game season as the side only let in 13 goals during the league campaign.
This season has been a different story, the club has already conceded 14 goals in just 19 matches, although under van Bronckhorst, the side has only conceded one league goal, showing that things are improving.
League Championships are won on the bedrock of a solid defence, as last season proved. Although our options at the back appear limited now due to injury, the 46-year-old has sorted our defensive woes out that were haunting us at the start of the season, and this could be crucial in the title race.
These are just a few of the reasons why Rangers will finish 1st as the season comes to an end. A new era has begun under the Dutchman and one that Rangers fans can get excited by.
Meanwhile, look back and reminisce about trophy day.
