Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has made no secret of his desire to bring Kent back to Ibrox
with many supporters echoing that sentiment – but the prospect of him heading to Villa Park highlights the problem with a reliance on the loan market.
While Rangers can’t have any complaints if Liverpool chose to sell Kent, it’s a bit of a kick in the teeth to lose out on someone who would have been a regular first-team player and not seeing a single penny in return.

With Kent’s performances at Ibrox being a big part of why clubs like Villa are now prepared to shell out eight figures for him, Rangers need to make sure they are striking the right balance.
Getting loan players in will always have a place for clubs like Rangers but they need to make sure that there isn’t an over-reliance on players only at the club temporarily.

If not, the Gers risk being left high and dry when key players are sold from underneath them with nothing Gerrard and co can do.
