Rangers manager Steven Gerrard will go into this weekend’s Scottish Premiership clash without Alfredo Morelos as the Colombian serves the second of a two-match ban – and Gerrard should turn to former England team-mate Jermain Defoe against the Steelmen.
Gerrard opted for Swiss international Cedric Itten last night but the former St. Gallen man struggled to really have much of an impact as Morelos’ replacement as Rangers slipped to a 3-2 defeat against St. Mirren.
Defoe was a late substitute in Paisley but the veteran should be given the nod to lead the line aginst Stephen Robinson’s side with the Light Blues looking to extend their lead over Celtic at the top of the table.
With Neil Lennon’s side not in league action this weekend, Rangers could end up 16 points clear of their bitter rivals and simply can’t afford a slip-up to give them a little bit of hope.
Morelos’ ban will be up after the Motherwell game so the Colombian will likely come back into the side next week and Gerrard faces a big decision over who replaces him on Saturday.
Itten has impressed when he’s played generally but he really struggled to get going last night in Paisley and Rangers can’t afford to drop any points in their charge towards, hopefully, lifting the title.
Defoe’s experience can really make a difference this weekend and his outstanding goalscoring record for the Gers will also really help as the Gers look to continue their unbeaten league run.
