Rangers outcasts could get chance to impress after Dubai trip

Rangers duo Jamie Murphy and Greg Docherty were two of the more surprising faces to join Steven Gerrard’s squad when they headed out to Dubai for a ‘mini pre-season’ but could the pair be handed a reprieve after the trip to the Gulf?

The pair have mustered a meagre 224 minutes of first-team action between them this season but with a clash against Stranraer the first game back after the winter break, Gerrard could give them a chance.

Both have been reported as being set for the Ibrox exit door this month and there is a real chance that one, or both, are moved on before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

Murphy’s has never really had a look in since returning from a serious knee injury which has effectively cost him 18 months of his career – and Docherty’s impressive season on loan at Shrewsbury looks to have been in vain as he can’t get close to the matchday squad.

Facing League One opposition in the League Cup would be the ideal opportunity for both to show what they can do in competitive action and the chance to join the rest of the first-team squad in Dubai would suggest they aren’t totally out of the picture yet.

Impressing against Stranraer is clearly quite a bit away from doing it against the likes of Celtic or Braga but it would be a fantastic opportunity to show they still have some sort of Rangers future – or win themselves a move elsewhere.
