Rangers keeping Morelos is more important than any summer signing

Rangers face a hectic 48 hours as they face Celtic tomorrow lunchtime before the transfer window enters its final hours – and the best bit of business that could be done at Ibrox this summer will be ensuring Alfredo Morelos is still a Rangers on Tuesday morning.

Gers boss Steven Gerrard insisted that none of his stars will be sold between now and the deadline on Monday night but money talks and if a big enough bid comes in then the decision could be taken out of Gerrard’s hands.

However, it doesn’t look likely that will happen and keeping the 23-year-old at Ibrox beyond this weekend is going to be vital to Rangers’ title hopes.

After netting 30 times last season, Morelos has already scored 10 goals since returning to action after the summer break and looks to be at the top of his game – and that’s only a good thing for Rangers.

There’s no doubt some of the signings that have arrived this summer have a big future ahead of them – whether at Ibrox long-term or elsewhere – but there are few, if any of them, who are as important to the side’s success in the short-term.

It’s not just his goals either.

For some reason, he doesn’t get anywhere near the credit he does for the way that he terrorises opposition defences.

Whether it is his runs off the ball, the way he uses his incredibly upper-body strength to keep hold of possession when it looks certain he’ll lose it or the intelligence of some of his play, Morelos is head and shoulders above any other strikers in the country just now.

Some might think that’s a bit harsh on Jermain Defoe after the veteran made a strong start of his own this season but when push comes to shove and you can only pick one of them, it’s Morelos who should get the nod every time.

There’s going to be a time when Big Buff will eventually be sold but, hopefully, it doesn’t come any time soon.
