Aston Villa have a ‘strong interest’ in appointing Steven Gerrard as their next manager, according to a report, but the idea that the Rangers boss is going anywhere at the minute seems unthinkable.

Villa are sitting ninth in the Premier League after an impressive campaign but, according to Football Insider, Dean Smith’s “position as manager is far from secure in the medium and long-term.”

That has led them to looking at potential replacements and chief executive Christian Purslow is said to be keen to lure Gerrard to the Midlands and help push the Villans further up the table next season and push for a place in Europe.

Gerrard and Purslow worked together at Liverpool and the Anfield icon’s impressive work at Ibrox has caught the attention of the Villa Park hierarchy.

However, after guiding Rangers to the title this season and a crack at the Champions League in 2021/22, there seems little likelihood of Gerrard upping sticks and leaving any time soon.

While the Liverpool job coming available would seriously test that theory, the likes of Aston Villa, Crystal Palace and Newcastle United are going to have really pull a rabbit out of the hat if they are to entice Gerrard away from Ibrox.

Since taking the reins at the club, the Anfield legend has built up a glowing reputation as a manager and has written his name into the club’s history books by securing title number 55 and ending a decade-long wait for major silverware.

It is obvious that Gerrard isn’t going to be at Ibrox forever and when he does move on, he’s going to be tough for Rangers to replace, but the prospect of him leaving Ibrox to take charge at a mid-level Premier League side seems very unlikely.

There will undoubtedly be offers for him, but with plenty more still to do at Ibrox, Villa and any other potential suitors are going to have to look elsewhere.
