Veteran striker Jermain Defoe is out of contract with parent club Bournemouth in the summer – and keeping the veteran striker at Ibrox could prove key in keeping Alfredo Morelos at Ibrox long-term.
Defoe joined the Gers on an 18-month loan deal in January and has been in blistering form so far this season with 13 goals to his name despite limited appearances in the side.
Defoe’s arrival at Ibrox has appeared to play a big part in helping Morelos find another level to his play and the Colombian has put in some of his finest performances in a Rangers jersey over the last few months.
While the pair have barely played together, there’s a clear bond between the two and the former England international looks to have taken El Buffalo under his wing.
Defoe is also clearly enjoying his football at the moment and that is being reflected in his performances as the striker bags a goal every 53 minutes on average so far this term.
With his Bournemouth deal up in the summer, it would be crazy not to have talks with Defoe and see what it would take to keep him at Ibrox in what is likely to be the final year or two of his top-level career.
If Rangers can do that, the chance to continue working with Defoe and learning from someone with such a vast array of experience could well be enough to keep Morelos in Glasgow a bit longer – despite near-constant speculation over his future.
For everything that’s been said about the Colombian’s mentality, it’s obvious that he’s not daft and he’ll know as well as anyone that continuing to learn from Defoe, Steven Gerrard and the like can only make him an even better player.
Morelos has never hidden his desire to play in England’s Premier League and there are few players who have scored more goals in that competition than Defoe.
El Buffalo will be well aware of this and, if Defoe extending his time at Rangers is something that could influence him staying in Glasgow, then Gers fans will be desperate to see a new deal handed to Defoe.
