Rangers’ investigation of an alleged Covid breach by several of the club’s players has Gers fans on social media furious – but the ‘Covid Four’ don’t have far to look to see what the repercussions of their crass stupidity will be.

After the club confirmed they were looking into the incident which saw ten penalty notices issued by Police Scotland, they only need to look at how things panned out for Jordan Jones and George Edmundson to have an idea of what fate awaits them.

The four players, understood to be two first-team players and two Academy youngsters, will no doubt have to face the wrath of Steven Gerrard and almost certainly face hefty bans from the Scottish FA.

Jones and Edmundson were both hit with seven game bans and similar bans for this latest breach would almost certainly, given the timing, see them ruled out for the remainder of the season anyway.

After returning to the squad, both players left the club on loan with Jones heading to Sunderland and Edmundson to Derby – and it seem that both have been seen in a Rangers shirt for the last time.

While all the players involved will be punished fairly if they are found to have broken the rules, the long-term repercussions for them will go way beyond the club’s own internal disciplinary process.

Given how close to the title and a continued run in the Europa League, the idea that fringe players would potentially risk all of that for a few beers and some company is beyond belief.

Footballers, by and large, still have as close to a ‘normal’ life as can be with the restrictions in place as a result of Covid and there can be no excusing anyone who flaunts them.

Although some will want to point to their youth as an excuse, having seen what happened with Jones and Edmundson, there can be no justification for it.

If Rangers punish them to the fullest extent and ultimately look to move them on as a result, they can have absolutely no complaints.
