Rangers must join chase for American wonderkid

Teenage American star Gianluca Busio has been creating waves on the other side of the Atlantic after breaking into the Sporting Kansas City side – and the Gers must look to bring him to Ibrox as some of Europe’s biggest sides start to pay attention to the 17-year-old.

Busio made 22 MLS appearances in 2019, starting ten of those, and chipped in with four goals and two assists in an impressive campaign for the teenager.

The US u-17 international has already been the subject of two transfer bids from Serie A side Fiorentina, Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla reported on Monday and Rangers should do what they can to join the race for his signature with Inter Milan and Manchester United are also among those chasing the teenager.

Busio’s dad is Italian which would mean there would be no work-permit issues if a deal can get done in the next transfer window, although the looming threat of Brexit leaves that up in the air beyond January – and also allows him to move from the US to Europe before his 18th birthday.

The box-to-box midfielder could well find the prospect of being around the first-team at Ibrox immediately and competing for trophies a more exciting proposition than joining one of the big Academies on the continent and have to bide his time.

Rangers have done some really impressive work with the Academy sides in recent years and, while he’d almost certainly skip that if he came to Ibrox, it would likely be something that could sway his decision.

Sporting KC are unlikely to want to let Busio go on the cheap but their hand seems likely to be forced sooner rather than later – and with ex-Ger Gedion Zelalem a current team-mate of Busio’s, Rangers could just have someone to help sell Glasgow to the teen.
