Scottish football’s own version of Grandpa Simpson has managed to make himself look ridiculous yet again as Hugh Keevins’ latest Sunday Mail column has shown him up as swallowing to sort of Sevco propaganda you’d usually see on Kerryfail as he took a bizarre dig at Rangers players.
While rabbiting on about the car crash that is Celtic’s recent form, the bold Shug claimed that their latest wunderkind Conor Hazard has now won more medals in Scottish football than any of the Rangers players he’ll likely come up against next weekend.
Keevins made the comment as a sly aside while trying to make a point about how poor Celtic’s recruitment has been but it just goes to show how utterly clueless some Scottish hacks really are.
Of the current crop of Ibrox stars, there are very few who have won medals in Scottish football but there are some who have at least one medal to their name.
First of all there’s Ryan Jack who helped Aberdeen lift the Scottish League Cup before making the switch to Ibrox, which, given Celtic’s dominance of the domestic game at the time is a remarkable achievement.
Jack isn’t the only one who has a wee trinket or two to look back on when he calls time on his career though – and Shug might need to dig out his abacus since it appears he’s having some difficulty with basic arithmetic.
Veteran midfielder Steven Davis has three league titles, three League Cups, and two Scottish Cups to his name and the Northern Irishman – an international team-mate of Hazard’s – isn’t even the most decorated player at Ibrox.
That honour falls to Allan McGregor.
The shotstopper has won five Scottish Cups, three league cups and three league titles which, I am reliably informed, is more than a single Scottish Cup.
Perhaps Hugh should check what he reads on Twitter before spewing it onto the page in an article and making himself look even more like a “speccy tube” than usual.
