Rangers keeper Jak Alnwick was one of four keepers to make the trip to Portugal as Steven Gerrard’s side prepare for the new season – but the keeper’s appearance on the plane was a surprise as he looked destined for the Ibrox exit.

Alnwick spent last season on loan with Scunthorpe United after falling down the pecking order at Ibrox with the arrival of Allan McGregor.

The former Newcastle youngster was already back-up to Wes Foderingham before McGregor’s arrival and it seemed as though he was headed for a move elsewhere.

Andy Firth’s arrival in January only made Alnwick’s future look even shakier so seeing all four travel to Portugal was a shock.

Foderingham and Alnwick could well still depart this summer but with Gerrard leaving the likes of Kyle Lafferty, Eros Grezda, Jason Holt and Graham Dorrans in Scotland, it was assumed Alnwick would likely stay behind too.

McGregor will almost certainly go into the new campaign as number one but after that, it’s a bit of a free-for-all.

Much will depend on who is still at the club when the transfer window closes but there could be a chance of a reprieve for Alnwick.

With only one year left on his Ibrox deal, it could end up that he leaves next summer but as things stand, it looks as though he’s getting one last chance to prove he deserves to stay at Ibrox longer.
