Gerrard needs to looks at long-term number one options

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard will go into the new season knowing there are certain areas of his Gers squad that desperately need upgraded of reinforcement.
Whether it’s the lack of outright central defenders, a shortage of quality in depth in attack or the need to add a midfielder who can dictate the tempo of a game, there’s few areas on the pitch the the Gers are particularly comfortable for options.

With veteran keeper Allan McGregor in arguably the best form he’s been in for years, the number one spot is one that most would agree doesn’t really need any new additions – but Gerrard must look beyond the short-term with McGregor’s career in its final seasons.
There’s no need to simply wield the axe and put McGregor out to pasture, but there needs to be serious thought given to the long-term position and ensuring whoever is tasked with replacing McGregor is ready to step right into the side.
It doesn’t matter whether it’s Wes Foderingham, Robby McCrorie or someone new brought in over the summer, but there needs to be serious planning done for the not-too-distant future.

McGregor will obviously have a big role to play in the coming season but with the keeper turning 38 in the New Year, retirement is looming large for him.
Rangers need to make sure they aren’t caught out when it does and have his replacement set and ready to go.
