There were a few players worthy of discussion for the man of the match award against Ayr United. The performance of the players overall can be played down somewhat due to the opposition. However, with all the challenges of the day combined, there was plenty to be enthused about.

Alfredo Morelos had a great game, despite his sure-to-be-often-replayed miss. The fact he scored a goal so quickly after that, and didn’t look at all affected by it, was very promising. His movement and link up play was as strong as ever, which culminated in a great goal for his second. With 2 goals and some good play, his contribution was certainly worthy of mention.

Josh Windass also scored twice, and had a very good game. He missed a great chance before his goals as well, heading a cross off the bar when it looked easier to score. Despite the heavy pitch, he was able to get past players with ease and put in a couple of great crosses that should have led to a goal. His pace and strength was far too much for Ayr to handle as the game wore on.

But man of the match, in my opinion, was Sean Goss. This was a game where good football was unexpected, given the weather and pitch. Somehow, he was able to play with real composure and quality. He directly assisted three of the goals, and it was his shot which rebounded off the bar for the equaliser. The cross he played in for Windass to score with his head was perfect, and he had a few other great balls into the box.

Goss was also hitting shots well from distance. Aside from the one which hit the bar, he came very close with an effort on his right foot which went just past the post. He competed well defensively, winning tackles and making interceptions when required. This is the sort of performance which makes Rangers fans desperate to see him signed up permanently, but also makes it all the more unlikely.

In a match where the pitch and weather would have been deemed a leveller, Goss showed just how much ability he has.
