David Weir has come out in support of Allan McGregor, in an interview with the Daily Record.
McGregor is facing a two-match ban over a challenge on Aberdeen’s Lewis Ferguson at Pittodrie last week.
He rushed out to collect an attempted through ball, but simultaneously caught the midfielder flush on the shin with studs showing.
Incident ‘inconclusive’
“As far as I am concerned it’s inconclusive. It’s up for debate rather than being a clear-cut incident where there is no doubt about his intentions”, David Weir told the Daily Record.
“How could the SFA possibly prove it was deliberate when it’s not a black and white issue? They’d have to make a decision purely subjectively and i’m not sure you can hand out red cards and suspensions on that basis.”
It must be said, the challenge didn’t look great at the time.
With alternative camera angles seemingly showing referee, Bobby Madden, looking directly at the incident, it was a surprise no penalty was given.
At no stage does McGregor change the angle of his leg or make an action towards Ferguson. He simply holds his position and momentum take him into the Aberdeen player.
Given those circumstances, accusations of deliberate foul play are surely hard to substantiate.
According to a separate report from the Daily Record on Tuesday morning, though, McGregor will now have to wait until Wednesday, to have his appeal heard.
