Former Rangers midfielder and one-time most expensive footballer on the planet Trevor Francis believes that there’s a huge level of ignorance over the pressure Steven Gerrard faces managing Rangers in his first job as a manager.
Francis insists that the former Liverpool captain is doing a “fine job” as his first season in charge nears its end – but admits it will be “hard” to catch bitter rivals Celtic.

“Celtic are ahead. They are used to winning.
“It’s a tough job to try and stop them and I’m not going to predict that 12 months down the line Rangers will be ahead at this stage.
“But it’s Steven’s first job and he’s doing fine at a huge club.”
Francis spent six months at Ibrox towards the end of his career after signing from Atalanta in September 1987, winning the League Cup before returning to England to join QPR.

While Gerrard’s reign started under markedly different circumstances to that of Souness, hopefully, he can have the same sort of impact in the dugout as the former Liverpool manager and captain.
