On Thursday evening, following Rangers draw against Porto, Steven Gerrard faced the media for a press conference, as followed by RangersTV.

The Gers boss was clearly delighted with what his players produced in the Dragao stadium.

They responded well to going behind and showed real quality and defensive solidity to dominate large parts of the second half.

It was a hugely impressive away performance, especially following the disappointing outing at Tynecastle just a few days previous.

Yet, Gerrard refused to get carried away and said something right at the end of the presser which fans loved.

“Possibly,” he said when asked whether or not it was his team’s best European away display. “Let’s put it this way, maybe if we took our chance, say Alfredo scores the header and we’re sitting here 2-1 – for sure, it’d be the best.”

“But, I just don’t want to be sitting here as the Rangers manager and saying it’s our best performance when we’re only taking a point away.

“Because we have to remember we are Rangers and we’ve come here to try to win the game.”

It’s just another indication that Gerrard knows what is expected at the club.

Points on the road in Europe are excellent, especially when it’s against a side who reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League last season.

Yet, there’s a culture of winning at the club and anything short of victory is always going to come with at least a tinge of disappointment.
