Former Rangers defender Stevie Smith believes Steven Gerrard’s side “over-achieved” in reaching the group stages of the Europa League last season and insists nobody expected the Gers to go so far.
The Light Blues made it through four qualifying rounds to reach the group stage, where they were eventually knocked out.

“Reaching the group stages and doing so well in Europe probably raised the expectation levels of the fans,”
Smith told the Scottish Sun.

“It was a new team, a new manager and I don’t think anyone expected them to go so far.”
Rangers face the same arduous task to reach the group stage this year and will get their qualifying campaign underway on July 11th.

Hopefully this season the Gers won’t find themselves going to the likes of Croatia and Macedonia in their bid to qualify for the group stages.
