Shortly after Steven Gerrard provided an update on Rangers’ plans for the January transfer window, one reported target may have put a spanner in the works.
Rangers had apparently renewed their interest in the 23-year-old, after failing to secure his signature in the summer.
According to a Daily Express report, Andy Scoulding, Rangers’ chief scout travelled to watch Cooper turn out for Millwall against Bolton in November.
However, that quest for his signature is now over. Millwall announced this afternoon, that the he has signed a new long-term contract.

The news is even more sickening after a glance at Cooper’s stats.
Despite operating exclusively at centre-back, he has registered an incredible three goals and six assists in the Championship this season.
Millwall's Jake Cooper is currently tied for the Championship lead in assists with 6.

At 6ft 6′, he is more than a handful in the box, as those numbers show. Clearly, Millwall were eager to tie their man down to prevent further speculation turning his head.
A month is a long time in football, and it’s difficult to know for sure if Gerrard was still chasing his signature. However, this finishes any rumours once and for all. Cooper is officially off the market.
Some reassessment may be needed, but perhaps it will prove to be a blessing in disguise.
It’s in forward areas that Rangers most need to strengthen and this news may allow all efforts to be put to that end.
