Rennes boss desperate to keep star despite reported Rangers interest

Rennes manager Julien Stephan has admitted that he is “hopeful” Edson Mexer will stay with the French side after it was reported that Rangers boss Steven Gerrard wants to bring the defender to Ibrox this summer.
According to the Scottish Sun, Gerrard watched Mexer in action during their 2-2 draw with Monaco earlier this week as he plots a move for the Mozambique international.

Stephan thinks Mexer has been “very important” for his side this season and hopes he will stay with the French Cup winners.
“He has been very important or us. He’s had a great season. I know what I think of him and the president knows what I think of him and how important he is,” Stephan said, as quoted by the Scottish Sun.

“I remain hopeful he will decide to stay with us next season.”
Gerrard will lose Joe Worrall and Gareth McAuley this summer so there is a definite need to bring in at least one central defender.

With Connor Goldson and Niko Katic already at the club, bringing in another experienced head would be a good move for the Gers.
If they can secure Mexer on a Bosman then it would fit the bill perfectly and add more quality to the squad ahead of next season’s title challenge.
