Rangers to travel to Northern Ireland for prestigious youth cup

Rangers have been confirmed as one of the teams taking part in this summer’s SuperCupNI as they join a host of elite sides from across Britain and beyond at the prestigious tournament.
Tournament organisers confirmed to Belfast Live that the Gers – and Old Firm rivals Celtic – will both take part, although will compete at different age groups.

The Gers will contest the Junior tournament at under-15 age level – and were the first ever winners at that age group in 1985 when a young John Spencer starred in a win over Craigavon on penalties.

Gers sides have also reached the final of the Premier tournament (under-17) on three occasions.

There were wins over Motherwell and Nottingham Forest in the final in 1984 and 1992 before losing to Cherry Meadow of Dublin in 1993.
This year’s edition – the 38th – will run from July 28th through to August 2nd and will see games take place in a number of locations.

Rangers have recently started returning to the competition and with a massive number of supporters on the other side of the Irish Sea, the young Gers will almost certainly be well-backed.
After seeing the under-18s lift the Alkass Cup in Qatar last month, lifting the SuperCupNI would be another impressive achievement from the Academy and further proof of the quality coming through the ranks.
