Rangers to strike deal with former Premier League international - report

Rangers are set to hand a fresh deal to Ibrox legend Steven Davis which will see the former Premier League international sign on for another year.

That’s according to the Daily Record, who claim that a one-year extension for the former Aston Villa, Fulham and Southampton star is set to be agreed.

The report claims that a new deal is “close” following “positive discussions” regarding Davo’s future and his role in the team despite the midfielder being 37.

Still a regular for Northern Ireland, the ex-Southampton captain is a Rolls Royce of a footballer and a special talent who brings a range of qualities to the side.

A confident and unfazed midfielder who can control the tempo of matches from the middle of the pitch, Davis has a calming authority and his experience is often invaluable.

Not only this, but the midfielder prides himself on always being available for a pass and has the ability to slice open defences with his vision and ability, whilst also being able to add the odd goal too.

The news also comes amid talk of interest in a player/coaching contract at Scottish Premiership rivals Motherwell and St Mirren.

If Steven Davis does sign, it will follow a new contract being handed to Scott Arfield with some conjecture surrounding other out-of-contract players in the side.

Connor Goldson has been heavily linked to Premier League newboys Nottingham Forest whilst there are some doubts surrounding the future of Allan McGregor.

Leon Balogun is another big name who is out of contract this summer, though he has spoken about his eagerness to sign on at Ibrox.

The news surrounding Rangers midfielder Steven Davis also comes as Northern Ireland manager Ian Baraclough backed the Ulster Xavi to play into his 40s.

“I think he can play for another couple or three years but that’s me,” Baraclough said [Belfast Telegraph].

“I don’t want to ramp up any sort of pressure on him. I always get plenty of questions about him and I don’t like talking about the subject of him retiring.

“In the Scottish Cup final, I thought he was great. He came on in the Europa League final, calmed things down for Rangers, maybe could have even got a goal or two for Rangers as well and he put his penalty away, which shows his coolness of mind.

“He’s our leader, our captain, he’s someone we want around for a little while longer.”

Whilst Steven Davis could be set to sign a new deal at Rangers, theirs is some suggestion another Ibrox star could be on his way out of the club.
