Overnight, the Daily Record reported that both Rangers and Celtic scouted Dundee United striker Lawrence Shankland on Saturday.
Billy McLaren reportedly represented the Gers at Tannadice, as the 24-year-old striker banged in an impressive hat-trick against Greenock Morton.

Both Old Firm sides were also said to have monitored Shankland last season [Chronicle], but neither attempted to sign him from Ayr United in the summer, despite him being available on a free.
After netting 34 times for the Honest Men across 2018/19, he was snapped up by the Arabs and already has 15 goals in his first 12 appearances [Soccerbase].
The news of the scouting mission has naturally prompted speculation that either of Glasgow’s big two could attempt a move either in January or next summer.
Yet, given that he’s only recently signed a three-year contract [BBC Sport], any move would now likely command a considerable a fee.
Rangers supporters disagree over merits of suggested interest in Shankland
Steven Gerrard’s side have started the season well and the club’s two senior strikers deserve much credit for that.
Alfredo Morelos has 13 goals while Jermain Defoe has notched 9. Yet, even Steven Gerrard has suggested that without a third option, they may look light up front later in the season should one of those players pick up an injury [Scotsman].
That fear has some Bears suggesting the club should have already moved for Shankland, while others maintain he’s not good enough for Ibrox, even after his blistering start to the season.
Here’s a selection of reactions from Twitter:
Believe this you will believe anything, the guy is doing the exact same as he has for the past 2 seasons, he was available for free a few months back, if they were going to make a move they would have.

Should've signed him in the summer. Wouldn't have cost alot in wages.

Scottish Championship is not the place Rangers have been looking at to sign players so I guess that this Shankland rumour is pie-in-the-sky. Maybe Scott Banks or Chris Mochrie, but these excellent prospects are not even in the United first team at the moment so again I doubt it.

They’ll probably get promoted this season, so I would say we would be better seeing how he copes in the top flight. All going well, nick him with a year left on his deal, or if we can wait then get him for hee haw the year after.

According to who? Every time I’ve seen him I’ve realised why he isn’t a Rangers player.

TBF signing him in the summer he would need to have been loaned back out as he is not displacing Alfie or Defoe. Maybe next Season depending on what happens with the Buffalo.

Said at the time , buy him then loan back was the simple answer

Aye that is a joke.

Also not sure why Scotland don't give him a shout. Not like we have many strikers banging them in.
