Overnight, the Daily Record reported that both Rangers and Celtic scouted Dundee United striker Lawrence Shankland on Saturday.

Billy McLaren reportedly represented the Gers at Tannadice, as the 24-year-old striker banged in an impressive hat-trick against Greenock Morton.

Both Old Firm sides were also said to have monitored Shankland last season [Chronicle], but neither attempted to sign him from Ayr United in the summer, despite him being available on a free.

The news of the scouting mission has naturally prompted speculation that either of Glasgow’s big two could attempt a move either in January or next summer.

Yet, given that he’s only recently signed a three-year contract [BBC Sport], any move would now likely command a considerable a fee.

Rangers supporters disagree over merits of suggested interest in Shankland

Steven Gerrard’s side have started the season well and the club’s two senior strikers deserve much credit for that.

Alfredo Morelos has 13 goals while Jermain Defoe has notched 9. Yet, even Steven Gerrard has suggested that without a third option, they may look light up front later in the season should one of those players pick up an injury [Scotsman].

That fear has some Bears suggesting the club should have already moved for Shankland, while others maintain he’s not good enough for Ibrox, even after his blistering start to the season.
