Rangers striker Kemar Roofe will score “at least 15 to 20 goals” this season for Steven Gerrard’s side, according to former team-mate Chris Maguire.
Maguire and Roofe were team-mates at Oxford United and Maguire has kept tabs on his former colleague’s progress after he moved to Leeds, Anderlecht and then Ibrox.
Despite not being quite up to speed yet after a lengthy injury at Anderlecht, Maguire is confident the striker will bring “lots of goals” to the Gers in the push for 55.
“I spent a season with Kemar and he often played on either wing. He was comfortable on the left or right,” Maguire told the Sunday Mail.
“Then occasionally, he’d be put through the middle to use his pace. He was excellent at getting in behind and running channels. He’s good in any of the forward positions although, at Leeds, he became more of a centre-forward.
“He made that role his own there and that’s when I think he decided he wanted to be an out-and-out striker.
“He scored lots of goals and got a big move to Anderlecht off the back of it. Even in Belgium when he was fit, he scored goals out there too.
“So he clearly prefers to play through the middle now – that’s where you get the goals, the headlines and the limelight.
“Knowing the standard of Scottish football, I’d definitely expect Kemar to get at least 15 to 20 goals up there. Any striker signing for the Old Firm – with the demand on both clubs to create and take opportunities – you’ll get five or six chances in every game.
“So there’s real potential to get a lot of goals. A fully fit and confident Roofe will definitely score goals for Rangers.”
Roofe has already grabbed his first goal for the club following his move from Anderlecht and should get plenty more chance with Alfredo Morelos’ exit looking imminent.
Once he gets up to speed, he should be a really dangerous addition to the Rangers squad and, hopefully, fill the gap left by Morelos leaving.
