Rangers star makes international debut in 0-0 draw in World Cup playoff

Rangers defender Calvin Bassey made his international debut last night, coming off the bench for Nigeria in their 0-0 draw with Ghana in the first leg of their World Cup qualifying playoff.

Bassey was introduced in the 74th minute, replacing Zaidu Sanusi, with Joe Aribo and Leon Balogun also starring for the Super Eagles.

Aribo and Balogun were both named in the starting XI for the Nigerians, with eyebrows raised when Aribo was replaced after an hour by Brentford star Frank Onyeka.

The Rangers midfielder had been Nigeria’s best player up to that point and his substitution did little to improve his side’s fortunes.

The Super Eagles thought they had won a penalty ten minutes from the end before a VAR review changed the decision and left the game goalless.

With Balogun playing the full 90 minutes, Bassey’s maiden cap means he is now cap-tied to the African country having also been eligible to represent England and Italy.

Last night’s draw now sets up a winner-takes-all clash with the Black Stars on Tuesday for a place at the World Cup in Qatar this winter.

All three Rangers stars will be hoping they start on Tuesday, with Aribo and Balogun almost certain started for the Super Eagles.

With Bassey having made his debut at left-back after coming off the bench, the Rangers defender has shown at club level that he is more than capable of starring there for his country as they look to secure their place at the World Cup.

Meanwhile, Are these the new Rangers home kits for 2022/23 season?
