Rangers midfielder Stephen Kelly had a stellar season last term on loan with Ayr United in the Championship – and will now spend the new season in the Premiership with Ross County.

The Gers confirmed Kelly will head to Dingwall for the season after the Scotland under-21 international signed an extension to his Rangers deal which will keep him at Ibrox until 2023.

The midfielder is delighted to be staying at his boyhood club for the next three years and is confident his loan spell can help him force his way into Steven Gerrard’s starting XI.

“I’m delighted that I’ve now got another couple of years with Rangers to try and make the gap and get into the first team,” Kelly told Rangers TV.

“I had a loan spell with Ayr United which has paid off and hopefully I can now keep working and keep progressing in the years to come.

“I definitely think I am capable of playing top-flight football and I am excited to go to Ross County.”

Kelly’s performances for Ayr last season saw him named the Honest Men’s Young Player of the Season,  hitting the net six times and clearly impressing the watching Rangers management team.

His importance to Ayr was immeasurable last term, only missing one game all season after being called up to represent Scotland under-21s as Ayr lost to Wrexham in the Challenge Cup.

The chance to play top-flight football is a huge opportunity for Kelly and if he really catches the eye, he could even return to Ibrox in January to compete with the likes of Steven Davis, Ryan, Jack and Scott Arfield.
