A look at the news of the week regarding the World’s Most Successful Club.
We simply can’t do justice to the amount of internet tears and impotent rage on display yesterday. The SPFL statement, predicted to be such by most, saw not only the toys thrown, but whole limbs ripped off and launched from the pram. The hilarity is only matched by a deep sense of worry for the lives of some of those people.
Just take a stroll through Twitter, it’s sure to rumble on for a while yet.
This time last week, we had a huge overreaction to a closed-door friendly result. The Marseille draw on Saturday eased those fears considerably. The harshest critics of the manager have mainly been asking to see evidence of some sort of system or recognisable approach. We got exactly that. There’s loads to be proved and work to be done, but it was a timely reminder that friendly results aren’t worth taking too seriously.
That also applies to the game against Watford yesterday. Whilst a win against a Premiership side is laudable, the game itself was no more than a kickabout. We’re in a better place going into our final friendly against Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday, but we shouldn’t be too excited just yet.
Our incoming transfer rumours are like a broken record just now. Yet again, the main names being repeated often are Jamie Walker and Stevie Naismith. If both were to be signed, we’d certainly have loads of options from middle to front. The fact they haven’t been as of yet, and the competitive matches will be starting really soon, suggests we may have to wait until near the end of the transfer window to get them.
MORE RANGERS STORIES
For outgoing players, we’ve had plenty of noise and no further movement. We can all see a Martin Bain-style payoff coming for a few. Earlier links for Tavernier to Nottingham Forest look unlikely as they’ve just signed a right back. Warburton is also allegedly interested in signing Wes Foderingham. I’d rather we kept both of those players, who are important parts of the team and wouldn’t be easy to replace.
One rumour I was informed of by a very good source was that Murray Wallace was coming in for a trial. He’s a 24 year old defender currently playing for Scunthorpe. Once on our books as a youth player, he played with Falkirk at a young age before moving to England, and last season he was voted Player of the Year for Scunthorpe by both his teammates and the supporters. He’s left footed, and by all accounts strong and good in the air.
As things stand, this one is only a rumour. However, given that both Bates and McRorie have been so heavily involved in pre-season, you wouldn’t be surprised if we’re targeting another centre half. The younger lads would benefit more from loan deals than the odd game here or there, especially if said games were covering for injury or suspension when all the focus would be on them.
