Rangers were far from convincing as they picked up a 1-0 win over Ross County thanks to Ryan Kent’s deflected strike ahead of a massive week for the Light Blues.

The big talking point before the game was the absence of James Tavernier through injury – and his replacement as captain Connor Goldson – with the pair at the centre of complaints from fans over their recent performances.

Matt Polster replaced Tavernier while Goldson tip-toed his way through the game with all the composure of someone on a three-day bender.

The Gers dominated the first half and should have gone in at the break in the lead but somehow spurned several chances to take the lead as their domestic woes looked set to continue.

With only 12 minutes left, Rangers finally took the lead as Kent’s deflected shot spun beyond keeper Laidlaw and into the back of the net to ease the pressure on the Gers a little.

Kent’s goal was to prove the difference as Rangers now look forward to a Europa League clash with Bayer Leverkusen then next Sunday’s Old Firm.

Here’s how Steven Gerrard’s side performed:

Allan McGregor – 7

Picked up a knock in the first half as he watched much of the opening 45. Busier after the break with a couple of really big saves.

Matt Polster – 6

The American replaced the injured James Tavernier and put in a decent shift down the right. Will be interesting to see if he retains his place on Thursday.

Connor Goldson – 6

Skipper in Tavernier’s absence but looked absolutely shot of confidence as he seemed moments from disaster throughout. Managed to get through with a clean sheet though so hopefully will boost his confidence.

George Edmundson – 6

Looked a little nervy at times – understandably so – but done well enough to deal with the County attacks.

Borna Barisic – 6

Motored up and down the left flank but crosses weren’t finding their target. Most likely to create something but it just wasn’t happening for the Croatian today.

Glen Kamara – 5

Kept losing his footing early on and kept it simple without ever really getting going. Looks like a different player to the one we saw when he first arrived. Replaced as Rangers chased a goal.

Joe Aribo – 6

Subdued performance from the Nigerian international. Gave the ball away far too often. Shows some really nice footwork before giving it away too easily.

Steven Davis – 6

Another step towards a ‘normal’ Steven Davis performance. Had to take responsibility in midfield with Jack and Arfield missing. Still a bit to go but looking more like it.

Ryan Kent – 7

Tried to make things happen down the left but the final ball let him down too often. Deflection helped his shot beyond Laidlaw to seal the win. Goal put a shine on a pretty average performance.

Ianis Hagi – 5

Flitted in and out of the game before being replaced by Kamberi just after the hour mark. Needs to get more involved when he isn’t getting to be the main focus of the team.

Alfredo Morelos – 5

It looked like being another grumpy Morelos performance as he barged his way around the pitch. Replaced in the final few minutes by Niko Katic after struggling to really impact the game.

Substitutes: Florian Kamberi (5) Replaced Hagi with 30 minutes left. Jordan Jones (5) On for Kamara with 15 minutes to go. Niko Katic (4) On for Morelos in the final minutes.
