Rangers return for Niko Katic likely as van Bronckhorst set to assess defender

Rangers could lose several defenders this summer with Connor Goldson and Leon Balogun out of contract and Calvin Bassey very much in demand – but one who looks certain to be heading in the opposite direction is Niko Katic.

The Croatian has spent the season on loan with Hajduk Split in his homeland, with Hajduk having reportedly having a £3million option to make it permanent.

However, according to Football Scotland, they won’t be taking that up and Katic will be heading back to Glasgow this summer, with van Bronckhorst set to take a look at him in pre-season.

Katic last played for Rangers in a competitive game more than two years ago before Covd and a serious knee injury hampered his progress.

After returning to fitness, Katic was shipped out on loan to get more games under his belt and play regularly after so long out of action.

While Hajduk won’t be taking up their option to sign the defender permanently, the report claims he was unlikely to accept a move and wants to have one last shot at reviving his Rangers career as he enters the final 12 months of his contract.

If he impresses over the summer, he could earn himself a new contract at Ibrox but a poor pre-season will likely see him head for the exit.

Rangers defence likes to undergo summer overhaul – but will Katic have a part?

Gio van Bronckhorst may have to overhaul his entire defence this summer with Connor Goldson and Leon Balogun out of contract, Fil Helander seemingly made of glass and Calvin Bassey wanted by clubs in the Premier League.

That could give Katic a chance to earn a place in van Bronckhorst’s squad but it wouldn’t be a surprise if this was Katic’s last season as a Rangers player.

While he might be popular with fans, he’s no better than what Rangers have just now and the Light Blues need a higher quality of defender.
